![CENSUS OF ENGLAND AND WALES, 1911. EXPLANATORY NOTES. (1) Unless otherwise stated, the population figures both for 1901 and 1911, given throughout the tables, relate to the areas as constituted at the latter date. (2) Particulars of changes in area that have taken place since the date of the Census are, as far as possible, shown in footnotes. (3) The acreage quoted in the several Tables is that of land and inland water together, exclusive of tidal water and foreshore; the figures are derived from the latest returns furnished by the Director-General of Ordnance Surveys. (4) The spelling of the names of civil parishes in these Tables follows, with few exceptions, that adopted by the Ordnance Survey Department. (5) Persons on board vessels which were in the ports of England and Wales on the night of Sunday, April 2nd, 1911, or arrived there on the following day are, with certain exceptions, included in the population for the country as a whole, and are also distributed, with as much accuracy as the information obtained allows, to the several local areas. Fishermen who were at sea on the night of the Census and did not arrive in port on Monday, April 3rd, are not included in the returns of Population. The approximate numbers of absent fishermen on vessels belonging to the several ports, are given in Table 27. (6) The numbers of “ Families or Separate Occupiers” given throughout these Tables are equivalent to the numbers of Schedules collected.
