Put the chalk through the wide glafs funnel into the bottom glafs, holding it in the pofition, as re- prefented in Fig. I. ; and fhake the chalk toone fide. Place the bottom as re- prefented in Fig. 1]. Take the funnel out of the bottom part. Put in the o- ther glafs funnel; through which pour in the diluted vitriolic acid, till it come in contaét with the chalk. Remove this funnel; and immediately join to the bottom glafs the other parts of the machine, fee Fig. II]. The fixed air will now rife into the water contained in the middle glafs, forcing it up to the top part of the machine.
