![A New Scalpel Carrier, continued,— upoTi to operate in private houses or in tlio country tlie best means of carry- ing knives is a matter of interest. I have liad made for me by Messrs. Down Jh-os., Limited, an appliance wliich, while providing for the sterilization of the knives by constant immersion in a sterilizing fluid, provides a perfectly easy and satisfactory way of cairying them. It consists of a scalpel i-ack made to contain four knives held firmly in position with a bar whicli can ho fixed by a lover clamp. The scalpel rack is fitted into a metal tube 8 inches long by inches in diameter, which a screw-on lid renders air-proof. Tlie knives are sterilized and kept sterile by the tnbe being nearly filled with a solution of 1 part of lysol in 12 of rectified spirit. By no amount of shaking in tiny position or direction can tlie edges or points of the scalpels come in contact witli anything but the solution in which they are immersed. Each knife is thus kept sterile, does not rust, and retains its original sharpness unimpaired and its polish intact. D. M. Dcvi.sod to facilitate the tying of arteries situated at a depth from the surface of the body, and particularly in tliose cases where, owing to want of s])ace, great difficultj^ is experienced in slipping a loop of ligature along tijc forceps already in situ. The writer has found them of great assistance in cranial surgery. The method of using is extremelj^ simple. The ligature material, whether silk or catgut, is first looped over the notch in the lower blade and both ends crossed under the spring catch on the handle, where they are held tightly. 'The forceps can now be applied to an artery. When the vessel has been clipped tlio ends of the ligature should be released and tied in a surgical knot. If the knot is tightened the ligature will be found to slip by itself off the nose of the forceps on to the artery. F. F. Carroll, IM.B., B.Ch.
