In the ‘ Dioptrica’ the eye is compared to a camera obscura, and its accomodation is shown to be due to changes in the form of the lens. In his ‘ De methodo’, Descartes was one of the first con- verts to announce his adhesion to Harvey’s new doctrine. 449. DIGBY, Sir Kenelm. Good French edition of this celebrated discourse which caused quite a sensation at the time of its publication. This sympathetic powder consisted of nothing more than green vitriol, dissolved in water and recry- stallized or calcined in the sun. Digby claimed to have got the secret remedy from a Carmelite monk in Florence, and attributed its power to the fact that the sun’s rays extracted spirits from the blood. 450. DIOSCORIDES. This treatise on purgative plants is of great medical interest giving a full account of these medical plants, illustrated by a great number of really remarkable figures, designed by an artist’s hand. : According to Funck the cuts are engraved by van Kampen. — Somewhat browned, but very good copy. Turrisanus, 1562. Frs. 195. — A very important anatomical textbook from one of Vesalius’ pupils. ‘ Gabriel Fallopius’ (1532-62) ‘ Anatomical Observations ’ contain descriptions of the tubes named after him, and of the ovaries and of the round ligaments, Fallopius gave the scientific names that they now bear to the vagina and placenta. His descriptions of the trige- minal auditory, and glosso-pharyngeal nerves were the best up to their time’’ (Singer, Evolution of Anatomy). — Vesalius’ name appears on nearly each page of the book. On the first leaf, Fallopi, says as follows: ‘‘ Ad quod quidem (anatomes) genus instituti non levi impellebat ratione, dum absolutissimum Andreae Vesalii opus anatomi- cum legerem ; in quo mihi videbatur nihil posse desiderari ’’. — Upper margins of some leaves waterstained. Frs. 45. — Choulant, Handbuch, p. 37: ‘‘ A work of lasting value, indispensable for the comprehension of Hippocrates’ wri- tings, and for etymological studies dealing with them ’’, — First edition of this excellent exegesis of Hippocrates, ‘¢ Foesius was the most learned, industrious and able of the Hippocratic commentators before the time of Littré ’’ (Garrison). — Browned as usual, 457. FRACASTORO, H. Opera omnia. 20, 213 leaves, 1 leaf. With the author’s portrait and numerous diagrams. 4to. Half vellum. Venice, Giunta, 1574. Frs, 55. — Besides the ‘‘ Syphilis ’’ and the ‘‘ De contagione’’, are also contained in the ‘‘ Opera omnia’’: Homo centricorum, de anima, de vini temperatura sententia, de sympathia et antipathia, etc. ~ At the beginning a ‘‘ Vita Fracastorii’’. ‘¢ Fracastoro’s medical fame rests on that most celebrated of medical poems, Syphilis, sive morbus Gallicus, which sums up the contemporary dietetic and therapeutic knowledge of the time, recognized a venereal cause, and gaye the disease its present name ’’ (Garrison). — Margins of some leaves waterstained.
