The East-India Company had settled St. Helena in 1660, but soon after the outbreak of war with Holland in 1672 the Island was captured by the Dutch, only to be retaken by Capt. Richard Munden in the ‘‘ Assistance,’’ with three other vessels, the ‘‘ Castle’’ Fireship, the ‘‘ William and Thomas,”’ and the ‘‘ Mary and Martha,’ in May, 1673, whilst convoying the outward bound East-India fleet.
