As to the religious and secular publications now s numerously and freely circulated, their beneficial effects ar patent. On both sides of the House I notice them i many hands, diverting many a mind from dwelling on il own sad thoughts, and amusing the eye and producin: quietude, even where there may not be the mental capacit; for understanding the subject matter of the book. The details of my pastoral visitations could not fail 1 interest every one concerned about the welfare of tl Institution, but they are unsuited for the pages of th Report. It must suffice me to record the great importanc I attach to these visits and the real satisfaction they giv me. There are never wanting cases to which I can minist with peculiar pleasure, cases which cause one thankfully j recognize the thorough adaptation of religious truth, wi all its soothing influences, to those laboring under tl saddest form of human suffering, and to mark the pow inherent still in human kindness and human sympathy. Not unfrequently do I hear of those who, after the discharge, gratefully remember all that was devised f their temporal and spiritual advantage, while they we Inmates of the Asylum.
