    for the Medical Profession only VAS MEDICINAL SUBSTANCES OF ANIMAL ORIGIN IN TRO DU-CT-FOWN PREVIOUS to 1889, when Brown-Séquard published his well-known work, the use of animal substances in medicine, although probably as old as the healing art itself, was entirely empirical. Knowledge of the endocrine system has since increased enormously and the function of many ductless glands is now known. Important developments have been the isolation of active principles from certain of the glands such as the medulla of the suprarenal f ore Active body, posterior lobe of pituitary and principles the islands of Langerhans of the ‘*°'**** pancreas. Such active principles have been found to possess definite physiological activity and have become, therefore, of great clinical importance.
