    latter part of this book is not of the same definite character as that of, for example, thyroid gland. It is important that exaggerated claims—founded on insecure clinical observation and without physio- logical support—should not be made for this type of preparation. A system of grouping adopted by Burroughs Wellcome & Co. enables an estimate to be made of the potential therapeutic efficiency of any gland substance or combination. This system of grouping is preserved in the chapters of this book. CHAPTER 1.—In this are included those glandular products concerning the therapeutic value of which there is ample and indubitable evidence— physiological as well as clinical. The internal secretions produced in these glands can _ be presented in preparations capable of producing quantitatively demonstrable effects when ad- ministered to the human subject or to animals. The thyroid, pituitary posterior lobe (‘Infundin’), pancreas (Insulin) and suprarenal medulla (Adrenalin) answer these requirements. Liver extract has been found specific in the treatment of pernicious anemia. CHAPTER 2.—Here are discussed those glands, transplantation, removal or disease of which produces profound metabolic changes referable to the absence of a hormone, but for which the physio- logical and clinical evidence for substitution therapy is conflicting.
