    52 Under the Old Contract System, taking gas at 3s. 2d. per 1,000 cubic feet, the Vestry would have paid the Gas Company for gas only, per lamp per annum, £3 7s. 5½d., while under the Average Meter System the cost for gas is only £2 14s. 6½d. per lamp per annum. From the September Quarter, 1874, the Vestry have purchased the gas used for public lighting purposes, under the Average Meter System, and had the entire control of all matters relating thereto. The number of lamps at the end of September, 1874, was 1,700, they now number 1,892. The lamp services generally throughout the Parish are maintained by the Gas Company most efficiently. During the year they have been applied to 141 times for the rectification of defective service pipes, all of which they have attended to at their own cost. Refuge Lamps.—In addition to the 17 one hundred candle power lamps erected last year, 6 more have been fixed at various rests, also 12 twenty five candle power lamps at street corners, a complete list of which I submit on page 63. Damages to the following extent have been done to the public lamps during the year, through care lessness or accidents, viz.:—16 lamp-posts knocked down, 29 lamp columns broken, and 30 head-irons and lanterns broken and damaged.
