    Neos On FS, PA A Ys - in the text, in which Hippocrates is invited by the Abde- rites to vifit Democritus, has been fhewn by Reland to be the compofition of Epictetus, NOTE [F ], page 108. Tue firft defcription of-the Small-pox was given, not by Rhazes, but by Ahrun, an Arabian phyfician, the cotempo- rary of Paulus. Ægineta, who lived nearly 300 years before the time of Rhazes. His work, confifting of thirty books, to which he gave the name of Pandeéts, is the moft ancient of all the medical.writings of the Arabians. But although it was tranflated into Syriac by one or more perfons, it is mo longer in exiftence. Numerous extraéts from it, how- ever, have been preferved by Khazes, and, among others, his defcription of the fmall-pox, which he {uppofes to pro- ceed from a corrupt ftate of the fluids, and the effervefcence of the blood with the bile, “ex malo fanguine adufto cum. colera.” His prognofis is better than his method of cure, which is inert and not very judicious. In the commence + ment of the difeafe, he orders. the patient to be kept | warm, left the eruption fhould be repelled, and prefcribes the ufe of demulcent drinks and gargles. When the erup- tion lias run its courfe, he gives the following direétions: « Cum fint digefte (variole), jaceat patiens fuper farina. riz, et fumigetur cum foltis myrte et olivarum; et deficca- buntur” RHazes Continent. lib, XXX.
