    a NEW NOVELS. Ov. had the seduction of innocence for their story, and witty libertinism and triumphant villainy ; for their principal features. A simple country girl, an intriguing opera dancer, a profligate of — quality, modelled after Richelieu, and a valet- de-chambre, the double of the Scapins, were the dramatis persone well adapted to the moral of the tale; and with such a popular literature, it was almost a miracle that one virtuous wo- man or honest man was left in the country, to make that revolution which purified its pesti- ferous atmosphere. To return to the admirable volumes of Alfred de Vigny, there are scenes in them, which, for vigour and veracity, exceed anything in the English or Scotch historical novels of the day. The trial and execution of the Curé de Loudon, and the Abbess of the Ursulines, at the scenes in which Richelieu is the actor, are most dra- matic in incident, and picturesque in arrange- ment.
