    He was educated at Merchant.Tailors School, and being chofen Fellow of St. John's College Oxford, comply’d with the Parliament-Vili- tors in 1648. He was afterwards madeMinifter of the Church of Margaret Mofe$,FridayStreet, where he continued till he was ejected for his Nonconformity,^*** 1662: After which he retired to North-Warxborough in Hampjkire, where he lived privately twenty Years, ex- erciiing his Fun&ion fome Times, and died there June 1682. Fie preached fome of the Sermons in the Morning Exercife, viz. at Cripplegate, Serm. 3. in Southwark, Serm. 13. and at St. Giles's in the Fields, on 1 Jo. $. 9. S’outh-Eaft of this Place, upon the Banks of the River Thames, ftands Sheperton, or Sceperton, a fmall Village, whofe Manor was in the Lord John Beau¬ champ of Hauhe in Somerfeijhire, 16 Edw. III. Edward the Confdfor, by his Charter dated Dec. 26. 1466, confirmed, among other Lands, to the Abbot and Convent of Weft- mhtfter, eight Hides of Land in this Parifh, which had been given them before by one of his Predeceflors. The Beauchamps conti¬ nued Lords of this Manor for fome Time, but alienated it to the Tiptofts, who held if, till John Tiptoft Earl of Worcefter loft his Head for adhering to King Edward IV. and then it was feized by the Crown, from which it has pafled to Sir Bartholomew Read, and his Heirs, in whom, or their Aftigns, i it remains. The Church is a Re&ory, and for many Ages was infeparable from the Manor, and the Lords abovementioned prefented to it ; but of late it hath been feparated, and in the Hands of divers others, who have pre¬ fented to if. Two of the Re&ors of this Place are famous, viz. y Willi am Groofen, or Grocyn, a fingularly learned Man, who was incumbent in 1504. He was educated at Wickams School at Winchefter, and chofen Fellow of New College, Oxford,in 1467, who prefented him to the Redory of Neuton Long- vide in Bucky. After this, applying himfelf to Divinity, he became fo eminent, that he was chofe Divinity-Reader in Magdalene *College, where he difputed before King Richard III. and gave him fo great Satis- fa&ion, that he rewarded him ibountifully. He went into Italy to accompiifh himfelf in -the..Latin and Greek Tongues, which he fo fully effe&ed, that after his Return he read Greek Le&ures in Oxford, and became a great Friend and Tutor to Erafmus. Being made Mafter of the College of All-hollowe in Maid- ftone in Kenc, he religned Neuton-LongviUe, and retired thither in his old Age, and there died in 1522, being eighty Years of Age, and was buried in it, He wrote feveral Books, as, Trap}, contra Hoftiolum Wicklem ; Grammatical &c. and is chiefly memorable for his Le&ures in St. Paul's Church upon Dion Areopagita,in which he inveighed at firft againft fuch as denied the Authority of that Book : But after he had continued his Te¬ nures fome Time, he recanted his Opinion, and openly detlared, That he did not be¬ lieve the Dionyfm mentioned APIs ij. 34, to be the Writer of that Book. And Lewis Hughes, who Was the Incumbent in 1642, or thereabouts, when the Civil Wars began. He was eminent for hisConftancy and Loyalty, for being eje&ed from his Li¬ ving here, and fequeftered, he was impri- foned for fpeaking too laviflily againft the Proceedings of the Parliament againft their King. He died before the Reftoration. Keeping the Courfe of the Thames, we come to Sunbury, or Sudbury, another Village fitua- ted on the Thames Bank. The Manor hath from ancient Times belonged to the Bifliop of London, tho* we And, that King Edward the Confeflbr did by his Charter above- mentioned, confirm among other Lands fe- ven Hides in this Parifti by the Name of Sunnabyri, given by one of his Predeceflors, to the Abbey and Convent of Weflminfter; but the Church of this Place has been all along appropriated to the Dean and Chap¬ ter of St. Pauls, London, who are the Pa¬ trons of the Vicarage for that Reafon. In this Parifti alfo, there was anciently a Porti. on of Tithes belonging to the Priory of St. Bartholomew, in Weft.Smithfield, London, and a Penfion to the Abbey of Graftme, or Gre- ftene in Normandy. North-weft from this Place, at fome diftance from the Thames, ftandeth Hanworth, a little Village, remarkable for nothing but a Royal Seat, which, tho’ but fmall, was fo much admired byKing Henry VIII. that he made it his chief Place for his Pleafure, having the Thames in Profpeft, and
