When thefe would not move them from the Conftancy in their Faith, he proceeded to Condemnation, which hap¬ pen’d upon July 5. TheSubftance of which was; That they deny’d the Church of Eng¬ land, as then eftablifh’d, to be a Part of the Catholick Church of Chrift, but rather was of Antichrift, the Bifhop of Rome being its Head: That the Mafs as now ufed was naugh^, abominable Idolatry, and Blafphe- my againft God’s Word : That Auricular Confeftion is not good, as ufed then by the Church of England: That the Ceremonies of ufing Cream, and Oil, and Spittle, con¬ jur’d Water and Wax, or Chryfome, or Salt in Baptifm, were fuperftitions : Thar, as to the bodily Prefence in the Sacrament of the Altar, Chrift’s Body is in Heaven, and will not be contain’d in fo fmali a Piece of Bread, &c. After Condemnation they were deliver’d to the Sheriffs of Middlesex, who kept them in fafe Cuftody till they were commanded by Writ to fend them to the Place of Suf¬ fering : Accordingly Mr, Denley was carried to Uxbridge on Augujl 8. 1555. where was every Thing prepared for his Burning. In the Time of the Flames being about him he fung Pfalms, till Dr Story order’d a Faggot to be thrown into his Face, at which he defift- ed for a while, to the Rejoycing of that good Man,who protefted that he had marr’d a good Old Song by it: But he foon re¬ cover’d himfelf and fung again, tho’ hurt; and fo fingng expired. Much Pains were taken after his Death with Patrick Packingham to make him re¬ cant, but he refolutely afterted, That the Church they would have him turn to, was the Church of Satan, and no Part of the Church of Chrift; and that he could not join with it. Upon which he alfo was burnt at Uxbridge on Augujl 28, 1555'- Elizabeth Warne, Widow, the Wife of John Warne an Upholder, (who had before fuffered for his Religion) was apprehended in a Houfe near Boro.Church, on January 1. where divers were met to pray, and was carried to the Compter, where fhe lay Pri- l’oner till the nth Day of June, at which Time fhe was brought to Newgate, and re¬ main’d to the End of July. Then fhe was fent by the CommiOidners abovemention’d to Bonner, Bifhop of London, whofe chief Obje&ion was concerning the real and corporal Prefence of Chrift in the Sacra¬ ment of the Altar. She appeared before him feveral Times, but no Arts, Perfvv a li¬ ons, or Arguments could prevail with her to alter her Faith, She bad them do what they would with her, for fhe was convin¬ ced, That if Chrift was not in an Error, fhe was not in an Error. Upon which An- • fwer, fhe was conven’d into the Confiftory, adjudg’d and condemn’d as an Heretick on July 12. and was burnt as fuch at Stratford* le-Bow in the faid Month. Anno. Vcm. 1555. 'Dr. Story, her Kinfman, being lately made a Commiftioner, was the chief Instrument: in her Death. Robert]Smith, Servant to Sir Thomas Smitht Provoft of Eaton, from whence he was pre- ferr’d to a Clerkfhip in the College of Windfor of 101. per Ann. was brought to Newgate Nov. 5. 15:55. being a Man fer¬ vent in Religion', as it was taught in the Days of Edward VI. He was feveral Times, examin’d by Bifhop Bonner, concerning Au¬ ricular Confeflion, the Sacrament of the Altar, the Church-Baptifm, Orders, Holy Water, Anointing, &c. in which he fhew- ed his DifTent from the Church of Rome9 and accordingly was condemn’d July i2„ and fufFer’d at Uxbridge, Augujl 8. Where it is remarkable, That when his Rady half- burnt was fallen down in the Fire, black and feemingly dead, he rofe up and lifted up the Stumps of his Arms in a rejoycing Manner, and then fell down dead. William Hale, a conftant Martyr of Chrift,, was examin’d the fame Time with the two former, and with them received Sentence of Condemnation ; as alfo did Stephen- Har- wood, and were burnt William Hale as Barnet, and Stephen Harwood at Stratford-le* Bow, about the latter End of Augujl, 1555, At which Time alfo George King, Thomas Leyes, and John Wade, being fick, died in their Prifon, and were buried in the Nighe by their Friends, who durft not appear prop- Ur metum Judaoruma When
