(Ill) CO 0 0^ BiJ CgH,SO OR ,0. , ^BiOH C,H,—0/ COOH It is therefore possible to modify the effect of the preparations, according as the monobismuth oxyiodide lake (Formula L), the dibismuthoxyiodidelake (Formula II or a dibismuthoxyiodide lake poorer in iodine (Formula III.) of the tannin is produced. The above products are suitable both as powder for wounds, as also for the ^ preparation of bandage gauze. The property of the new products, of serving with advantage for the production of bandage gauze is explained by the fact that the tannin bismuth contained therein reudily fixes itself on vegetable fibres in a similar manner to the tannin antimony of the tannm-tartar emetic used, as well know n dyeing as a mordant. . jq Example—30 parts of crystallised bismuth nitrate are dissolved in 5 parts of water with ad^tion of three parts of nitric acid, and to this solution are added 12 parts of a 20 per cent, sodium acetate solution. • solution of 195 parts tannin and 95 parts potassium iodide IS then added the mixture being well stirred, when a dark brown precipitate 15 Will at once be produced. ^ lo A dilute solution of 10-8 parts of bicarbonate of soda is then added, whereby the previously brown precipitate is made to assume a light grey colour. The mass is allowed to stand for some time, is then filtered, washed with a small quantity of water, pressed and dried. Huaunuy oi The body thus produced corresponds as regards its composition, with the above given Formula I. of a monobismuthoxyiodide lake. • It forms a grey powder which is quite insoluble in water. On boiling with water the grey colour of the compound turns into a yellowish coloration with dl^oXon and production of a tannin odour.
