The pay attached to the rank JXr/ ^ y^^^' ^'^h' ^ith 10 per cent, added for each five years' service, becomes $3,000 «??nn /'^l ^^'2^0 ^ft^^ years, and f3 500 after 20 years. The montlily pay of lieut - colonel, colonel, and brigadier - general is 3333..33, 13/5 and $458.33 respectively. Allowances, accord- ing to rank, are given for quarters. Mileage while travelling on duty is passed, and the amount .sufficient to cover expenses of journey. Transport for pro- fessional books IS allowed, with a reasonable amount of baggage Mounted officers, including all officers of the medical corps, are provided with stabHng, forage and transportation of hoi-ses owned and actually kept by them, not exceeding two for a]l ranks below a brigadier. Groceries and other articles may be purchased from the commissarv, and fuel from the quartermasters' departments at about wholesale cost jarice. There is an Arm^/ Medical School at Washington for the instruction of medical officers. The course of instruction is for five months (annuallv). Five pro- fessors are selected from among the senior medical officers of the army, also an instructor in first aid and ambulance drill. There is a president of the faculty of the Army Medical School and professors of military surgery, military hygiene, militarv medicine, and clinical and sanitar}' juieroscopv, in- cluding bacteriology and urinology.^ Leave of absence at the rate of one month in tlie year on full pay is allowed, and if not taken may accumulate to a maximum of four montlis, which may be taken after four years. Retirement is permissible at any time for disability incurred on duty, or after 40 years' service. It is compulsory at the age of 64.
