If an association between pathogens and latitude, and pathogens and Gm exist (Cappellini, personal communication), the observation could be explained. On the basis of population and family data it has been concluded that the alleles present in these populations are as shown in Table 17. The Cau- casoids and Negroids are readily distinguishable from each other and from the Mongoloids and the Aborigines on the basis of their alleles. The Mon¬ goloids and Aborigines may be distinguished by the frequencies of the alleles. The Gm, Gm-like, and Inv groups appear to be as satisfactory as the blood groups for distinguishing populations. This remarkable poly¬ morphism implies that these serum factors have some selective value. While, thus far, no such effect has been uncovered, it seems likely that further study of this aspect of the serum factors will be rewarding. 'Reprise' The genetically determined gamma globulin factors are clearly wide¬ spread in man and equally clearly represent a polymorphic system.
