And tho’ I dare not fay that all the Changes of the Barometer, depending upon thofe of the Jtmofphere, are clearly account¬ able for by thele Principles; yet they cer¬ tainly anfwer in fo many Inltances, that a ftricter Attention to them, and Application of them, might perhaps go a great way in explaining thofe few of which, by their feeming Inconfiftency, or Irregularity, we find Reafon to be diffident. Thus I have fometimes wonder’d at the Mercury riling in a warm, moift Southerly Wind ; but after a few Hours Sufpenfe, an Eaft, or Northerly Wind, driving above, has prevail’d over the South Wind below, and reconcil’d the Rife of the Gla/sy to the Weight of the Airy and the State of the Weather. Sometimes alfo, in the like Cafe, when there has been no fuch apparent Op- pofition of Winds, I have fufpected, either the Spring of the Air exerting it felf in a more than ordinary manner ; or that the Upper Regions of the Atmofphere, being more cold and condens’d, have difcharg’d their Weight upon the Lower; and thereby caus’d the Rife of the Mercury, tho* the warm rarefy’d Air near the Surface of the Earth,](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30509221_0056.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
