Thefe con- verged rays they infufed, and worked in- to the grand compound fo dexteroufly, or rather by fuch a flight of hand, that, al- tho’ I ftood very near them, and obferved all their motions, I could not poffibly difcern; or comprehend the manner of their operation. And it would therefore be, a fruitlefs at- tempt, if I fhould endeavour to defcribe it, in hopes of giving my reader a juft idea of it. I fhall only mention one particular, as the ef- feét of this wonderful phenomenon, the truth of which Ican vouch upon my own know- ledge and experience. During the whole time they were working this engine, all the farm houfes and cottages in the neighbour- hood were as dark, as the houfes in Lonpon in a thick winter fog, or when a black cloud in fummer, the certain fignal of a thunder ftorm, hangs over the city.
