    a duct of stoneware pipes passing under the floor of the ad¬ joining compartment, thus giving through ventilation. 2nd. An inlet near the ground level in the wall behind the bed. (These two openings are made with movable lids and gratings, and the ducts slope to the outside, so that they can be washed out with a spray.) 3rd. A Sheringham valve above the bed. 4th. An opening in the ceiling. Owing to the slope to the ground some of the inlets of the ducts have to be in pits below the ground level. The lower illustration Fig. 55, shows how clear a view can be obtained from the duty-room inspection window, through the glass partitions, of the whole of the compartments in each half of the block. Over each bed hangs an electric lamp which can be turned on by a switch in the duty-room (as well as by one in the verandah), so that the nurse, without leaving the duty-room, can get a view through the glass partitions of any patient in the block by lighting up his cubicle without lighting that of any other patient. In the verandahs, by the door of each cubicle, are pegs for hanging overalls for the nurse and doctor, and there are also lavatory basins with push-taps delivering hot and cold water for their use.
