![C 288 ] being at the time produced, which it is na- tural to suppose would immediately follow so great an extent of laceration of the in- ternal membrane of the urethra, and of the membrane which lines that part of the ca- nal which is formed by the prostate gland. It is however to be understood, that one half of the local mischief committed with something like impunity upon this urethra, would, in many patients of a more delicate constitution, and a more irritable habit of body, have been followed by symptoms that would have proved fatal. In this individual case, it is not to be doubted, that many attacks of irritation upon the bowels, and many paroxysms of fever attributed to the state of the bowels, were brought on by the mischief the ure- thra had sustained ; but so fractious was the temper of the patient, and so little amiable his disposition at all times, that nothing that happened to him connected](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21059469_0320.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
