![BV TlIK I'or.AlMSCOrK creased with the leiiylli of ihi' tube. J>iit if tlio fluid be chirk, the shorter tiihe^ l<> centimeters loiii;' must be usecL The tube is now fiUed with tlio nriuo, in tlu'saiiu^ manner as it was prex iuusly Jilh'd with distilled water, and again placed in the middle of the in- strument. The observer then notices if any alter- ation in colour of the two halves of the held havo taken plaee. If the uniformity of colour no longer cxistj he turns the screw ])elow the eye-piece until the two halves of the iield appear of precisely the same tint. The eyes are best rested occa- sionally during this part of the operation l)y look- ing on some white surfticC;, as the ceiling of the room, or a sheet of paper. When the two semi-cir- cles become exactly the same in colour, the num- ber of degrees which the moveable zero is distant from the hxed zero is read off; and if the fluid observed contain sugar, the moveable scale will be foimd to the right: but if albumen on]y, to the left. The number of degrees that the zero has moved gives, when divided by 2, the percentage amount of either sugar or albumen, if the longer tube were nsed; but the percentage is at onca knowUj if the shorter tube Avere employed,, as it is](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b2265169x_0105.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
