Besides, the boiler owners are men of means, and live in fine houses in the fresh air, far away from the smoke of their own chimney stalks. T one time the water supply of Glasgow was taken from the Clyde, and some vestiges of the immense pumping arrangements that did the work, may still be seen on the upper reaches of the river. At that time as at present, when any controversy came to the front, there were two parties, each advocating its own scheme for improving the supply. One party contending that the then supply was on the whole very fair, and at a moderate expense, might be made good enough for all practicable purposes. The other party contending that the attempt to make dirty water pure had always been a failure, and that the right plan was to find out some place where there was an abundance of pure water ready for use, and to bring it through iron pipes into the city.
