His men cam' down frae glen an' hill— Four gillies and a writer chiel—^ In kilts and hose, A' to oppose ' When tliL-y hacl proceeded eight or niue miles throug]i the Glen, they encoimtered a party consisting of two gentlemen (said to be Captain Oswald of Dunnikier, and a Captain Drummond) and six attendants, with dogs, guns, &c. The party were challenged for walking on what was said to be a private road, and were ordered to return to Braemar. This they politely, but firmly, refused to do, stating that they were unconscious of committing any trespass, and that tlie road, so far as they knew, was not private, but had been used as a public one from time immemorial. The Professor stated that he had travelled along it with the late Professor Graham and Dr. Greville m 1830 Scotsman,2iith August, 1847. ^ The rest of this cventful evening seems to have been employed by the scientific gentlemen in congratulating each other on their escape; and, on the part cf the Diike, in sending the fiery cross round thc country to raise his clan.—Ith September, 1847. ' The noblc Duko, accompanied by two gentlemen (said to be Mr. Alex. Stewart, W.S., Ediubui-gh, and Mr. Evans, a painter from London) and somc attendants, made his appcarancc Sootsman, 28th Avgust, 1847.
