    years—for it is now eight years since the first edition of this book was written—in what degree is an acquaintanceship with graphic method essential or expedient in the routine of busy practice ? To this I reply, as I replied then, that the acquisition of the necessary manipulative skill and experience, which the taking and interpreting of graphic records involves, will often entail too great an expenditure of time and energy adequately to repay the practitioner or the patient he serves. A universal and detailed acquaint¬ anceship with medical science as it exists to-day is no longer possible, but it behoves a practitioner to grasp new principles and to be conversant with new knowledge and its influence upon the care of patients afflicted with common maladies. While the pursuit of graphic work hy those who possess the special aptitude or a developing interest in the method is decidedly to be encouraged, yet it is clear that the universal adoption of graphic method is neither to be anticipated nor advocated.
