![anything like certainty, assign to its proper cause the symptoms I have spoken of as indicative of nervous exhaustion. Admitting this, I would, at the same time, point to the fact, that our great intellects and profound thinkers—men of genius, philosophers, states- men, scholars—men who actually work their minds night and day—are not, as a rule, afflicted with what I have described as jaded brains ; and that the men who are, as a rule, are neither remarkable for mental culture, nor for the possession of master minds, although they may be remarkable for the energe and enterprise they display in their intercourse with their fellows.
