![EccuEsIAE cum Calendario, RICHLY ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM (57 ll. 13 X 8} in.), written in missal characters, long lines, 23 to a full page, rubrics in red in a smaller character, calendar in red and black with illuminated initials and ornaments ; 12 MAGNIFICENT LARGE SQUARE INITIAL MINIATURES (measuring 3 x 4 in.) MOST BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED; and beside each miniature a large and very fine and richly illuminated decorative initial of natural flowers and ornaments ; each of these 12 pages surrounded by exquisite borders of rich floreate decoration, chiefly on gold grounds, interspersed with Natural Flowers, Birds, Fruits, Grotesque Animals (some of the latter treated humorously), some of the borders in diagonal and square compartments ; many hundred large and small illuminated ornamental initials and textual decorations, modern boarded red velvet. [See ILLUSTRATION] sm. fol. Sac. xy. EACH OF THE MINIATURES IN THIS FINE MS. 1s A GEM ; and is the Work OF A GREAT FrENcH Artist. The figures are drawn toa large scale and are mostly half length. The costumes are rich and gracefully disposed; the grouping and attitude natural. The colours used are blue, red, green, purple, ermine, yellow, pink and black, brilliantly high toned in rich gold. The subjects of the Miniatures are (I.) Toe Annunciation, (II.) Toe Visirarion, (III.) Tue Nativity, (IV.) THe SHepHerps (in heightened gold costumes), (V.) OFFERINGS OF THE Maa, (VI.) PRESENTATION IN THE Tempue, (VII.) THe Fuicutr into Eeyrt, (VIII.) Coronation OF THE VIRGIN, (IX.) CHRIST BEARING THE CRoss, (X.) PENTECOST, (XI.) Davip amonest Rocks (a middle-aged figure), (XII.) JoB anp His Frienps. [See Intustration.] The MS. was executed origi- nally for a member of the family of La Tour D’AUVERGNE and has their emblazoned Armorial bearings below the first page of Calendar and on two other leaves ; and a large shield on the last page with supporters, two lions, with helmeted crest, and Motto “Je endure pour durer”; below which is another motto in a ribbon scroll, Post tenebras spero lucem.” On a blank flyleaf in front is a long inscription to ‘ EMANNANUELE THEODOSIO DE TURRE-ARVERNIAE S. R. E. Carp. Buxionto,” indicating that this M%., originally in the Jesuits’ College of the Holy Trinity in Lyons, was presented by an ancestor of his and is now restored to him. It has also the stamp (in red) “ Hx Bibl. Ant. Morian proc. et Advoc. Regis et Urbis.” The brother of the Cardinal, Charles Godfrey de la Tour d’Auvergne Grand Chamberlain of France, died in 1771. MS. Books of Hours of this flat folio size are very uncommon. a lusaige de Paris tout au long sans riens requerir avecques plusieurs sufrages et oraisons nouvellement imprimes a Paris par Germain Hardoyn libraire demourant devat sainct Denis de la Chartre a lenséigne de la rose dor.” lit. goth.
