![[Chagatay] Lord of Samarqand of former days. He was besides lord over the whole of Persia, his empire stretching even to Damascus, and his name was Kazan Khán. He was of royal descent as regards his mother, but who his father had been never certainly was known. He was a very valiant commander who had won many battles; and he had promulgated laws and ordinances some of which are Still in force to govern the affairs of State throughout the empire of Timur. The second wife is as already said the Kuchik Khanum, which means the Little Lady: she was the daughter of a king whom they call Tumán Aga, and he ruled over a country that is known as Andarábah, The third wife bears the name of Tukel Khanum, the fourth is Chelpan Mulk Aga, the fifth is Mundasaga [Khanum] and the two next bear respectively the names Vengaraga [Khanum] and Ropa Arbaraga [Khanum]. The eighth and laSt wife is known as Jawhar Aga which in their tongue signifies the Queen of Hearts.1 Timur has celebrated his marriage with her but lately, namely, in the month of AuguSt that has juSt gone by: and it is he who gave her this name. When all these dames were duly seated and every¬ thing properly arranged the drinking began and was kept up for a considerable space of time. From the firát the various wives of his Highness were served with wine and next with that beverage of mare’s milk that is prepared after the fashion above described when we were being entertained in the tents where the princess Khánzádeh made her feaál. Timur soon after this called both of us ambassadors to come before him, and taking a cup of wine in his hand presented it to the Master in Theology [my companion Fray Alfonso Paez] commanding him to drink, for he knew well that I Ruy González would not taáfe of this wine.
