![how forsooth his Highness had on the previous Thurs¬ day given us command to return and see him, saying he would grant us speech and then dismiss us: but now this Chagatay had come telling us as from them—the Grand Chamberlains—that we were to prepare to set out forthwith on the morrow on our homeward voyage, and this had caused us much dismay. The Grand Chamberlains in reply told us that we could not possibly now have audience of his Highness, nor remain any longer at the Court; we mu¿t hasten our departure and set out exactly as they had sent the Chagatay to say. This indeed they had had to do and arrange because his Highness was in a very weak ¿late, having already loál all power of speech, and he might be at the very point of death according to what the physicians prognoálicated. They plainly said that this haále in dealing thus with us and our mission was necessary from the fadt that Timur appeared to be dying, for our own sakes we mud be off and away before the news of his death was here made public, and above all before that news reached the provinces through which on our journey we should have to pass.1 To all we could urge against this view of the case, or put forward againál our being thus summarily dismissed with no Letter to our King from his Highness, the Grand Chamberlains gave answer that it was useless further to discuss the matter, that w~e mud and should go immediately, and as for the reply to our King’s letter to his Highness it would be the business which that Tartar noble they were sending with us as our guide and companion would fully attend to. Thus matters undecided ¿lood over from that day Monday [the 4th] till Tuesday fortnight the 18th of November, when the Grand Chamberlains again sent that Chagatay to us.
