![defeat had not awaited to offer opposition, but had fled. Yet Idiku is now a great chief, having under his command more than 200,000 horsemen of his Horde. Toktamish and Timur have recently become friends, and together have sought to compass the overthrow of Idiku. With intent to beguile, Timur lately sent messengers to Idiku saying that he, Timur, was now on his side, that he loved him and had pardoned him all his misdeeds if indeed any there had been; further to prove he was his friend, and to make public acknow¬ ledgement that he Timur and Idiku were indeed of one kindred and lineage, he would send him one of his grandsons who should marry with a daughter of the family of Idiku. To all this it is said Idiku made reply that having in the paát lived for twenty years in the service of Timur, he knew perfectly to what he might safely give credit: he underálood the ways of Timur so well that it was not thus he was to be beguiled. He clearly perceived that what had been said was but to ensnare him, that if Timur wanted him as a friend he musd yield up to him half his power and in future fight side by side with him sword in hand and in equal alliance. Thus matters have been left un¬ decided. Further Toktamish had a son living in those parts whom Idiku had expelled from his lands, and recently Toktamish having taken shelter with Timur was now living in the vicinity of Samarqand. This son of Toktamish therefore went off to Kaffa the city which the Genoese hold [in the Crimea] on the borders of Tartary, and from that quarter, he began to make war on Idiku with such help [as the Genoese gave him]. Idiku however marched on Kaffa, ravaging all those lands round and about, whereupon the people of Kaffa coming to terms made peace with Idiku and that son of Toktamish had to depart. He has now sought shelter with his father and is living in the territories of Timur.
