![going from Khoy Straight to Mákú. Instead of this we now turned off by a road to the left hand, taking a direction that led south [weSt]. Thus we left Khoy on Tuesday at the hour of vespers, travelling all that night and the next day Wednesday we halted in some meadows, but only a sufficient time to give our horses their barley. Then passing on that after¬ noon and night on Thursday by the hour of vespers, we had come to a village where there was a small caStle, the people of the place being Armenians, for this was already in the Armenian country, though they were subjeSts of Prince Omar. Beyond this village to the south began a territory occupied by a Moslem folk of the Turkish race, and their country is known as TurkiStan. These people lord it over the surrounding diálridls, but they live at peace among the Armenians for the moSt part, and the region is rich in corn lands and pastures. On our arrival here we received news that Qara Yúsuf the Turkoman had raised the siege of Arzinján departing thence, and his troops now were said to be holding the road that we had intended to take the next day. We therefore sent forward one of our men to spy and see whether that Turkoman chief was already come into these parts, and late the next day Friday the man returned to us, saying that the road was open. We now immediately set forth on our journey and that night camped in some fields near by a large village, for all that day on our road we had passed many populous villages inhabited by the Armenians. In many of these villages there were fine churches, and we noticed that in the churchyards the tombstones and graves were ornamented with crosses Standing up as high as a man could reach, which were moSt beautifully carved.
