    Booth's Improvements in Applying Heat, $c. to Manufacturing Purposes. 44 and in order that the heat may more easily radiate through, as there is the “ same required for greater heats, but a little increase of from about half to 44 one inch, I claim for each increase; whereas tubes that are used in common 44 ovens are of one thickness only. As regards the bars, I claim for the few 5 “ in number that are used in this process, and the smallness of their dimensions, 44 as well as the mode of placing them one over another; thereby I am enabled 44 to furnish a fresh supply of bars whilst firing the oven. Further on in the said Specification also the words, “ I claim the small chamber above the top of 44 the large chamber, and for the small apertures therein. And, lastly, the 10 44 use or employment of coke, charcoal, peat, coal, cannel, and wood, either 44 separately or combined, as being entirely new, as applied to these manu* 44 factures.” Further on in the said description also the words, “ I claim, as 44 regards this application of my Invention, the whole of the novel process, 44 apparatus, mode, and combustibles, as employed in the operation; the whole 15 44 being a hot air apparatus. I also claim the variation of the shape of the 44 chamber, hearth, &c.” Further on in the said Specification, at the con¬ clusion of the description of Figure 3 of the said Drawings, also the words 44 I claim also under this head the smallness of the dimensions of my chimney 44 when compared with the ordinary chimneys in use for such purposes, and 20 “ for fixing the same in the centre, over the top of the kiln; or, if more than 44 one, for the same being placed in a line transversely across the centre of the 44 kiln. I claim the conical tube in the enamel kiln and the bars of the hearth “ being placed directly under the kiln, having the fire hearth without or “ within the kiln, and the hearth immediately below the kiln, and for lining 25 “ or coating of the said tube with fire clay in manner therein specified, and for “ the conical casing of iron and the mode of using it therein. I also claim as “ new the arrangement whereby the hearth is fed with fuel from the top of “ the kiln or through the bars, and for the door of the hearth being placed at “ the top of the kiln. As my Invention has introduced the use of coke for 30 44 the first time for enamelling kiln purposes, I claim its sole use for those “ purposes; in like manner I claim the sole use of coke in hardening on, and 44 in all other purposes which are specified and named in these applications; 44 the whole being a new adaptation of this combustible to these useful 44 purposes. Lastly, I claim the sole right of applying these kilns, &c., as 35 44 herein described, to the process of hardening on, should the same kilns be 44 preferred to the common ones, or for more delicate colors, and for thus 44 introducing iron kilns for hardening on, which is quite new as applied to 44 such purposes.” Further on in the said Specification, in the description of Sheet 2 of the said Drawings, also the words,44 With reference to this applica-
