![I have never met or known anybody with such a detailed Imowledge of the 2,000 odd children there are in her area. I guarantee she know's 95 per cent, of them bv sight and name, and can say where they live and what are their home conditions.” The Health Visitors acting as school nurses, and the District Nurses, continue to pay their ‘‘ surprise ” visits for the special purpose of examining children for uncleanh- ness. In all 63,887 children were e.xamined at these visits, and of these only 686 were found to be verminous. These sm-prise visits are a more clear indication of the normal state of the children, because no notice is given beforehand, as is done before the medical inspection, they m fact are ” surprise ” visits. Even at these visits less than 1 per cent, of the children were found to be unclean. (b) Minor Ailments. The total number of minor defects noted as requiring treatment is somew’hat in excess of previous years, viz. :_ (c) Tonsils and Adenoids. 1,110 cases were noted requiring treatment. The general scheme of treatment of these eases has been fully dealt with in previous reports. (d) Tuberculosis. Pulmonary.—Ten cases of definite pulmonary tuber¬ culosis were discovered at the school medical inspection during the year. Every effort is made to find these cases, and 553 children were examined as “contacts” of tuberculosis persons. (If this number three were found to be definite cases, a considei-able number were, however, classified as suspicious and referred for further examination. Non-]’ulmonary.—Eorty-niue cases, affecting glands, bones, joints, spine and otlier ])arts of the body were also noted as requiring treatment.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29132411_0016.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
