About this work

Description

Case-book.

In the last remaining leaf of the 'Hystories of the Cases' contained in this volume, the writer says they are 'the results of Memorandums or loose papers, compiled, and put in some sort of form ... and intended to recall to his own remembrance occurrences which actually happened to him in the course of his practice ... the six cases which stand first were so many selected from several more of which Mr P[axton] took notes while he resided under Mr [Richard] Lambert [ -1778] at the Hospital at Newcastle-upon-Tyne'. These cases are dated 1753-1759.

The other cases are in midwifery, surgical operations, and post-mortems: and there is an account of 'an operation of circumcision of the Jews' which he saw 'at the house of Mr. Myers in St. Mary's, Maldon ... 7 May 1792' (pp. 141-143).

The last section (16 ll.) contains 'An account of J.T.' This is a relation of the facts in his unfortunate partnership with a certain Dr. John Thorp, who defaulted in payment for his partnership, was incompetent, and otherwise an unpleasant character, and who caused Paxton endless trouble and annoyance in 1797-1799.

Produced in Maldon (Essex).
