    This is a first step towards a comprehensive resource to improve the health of London women. About the research The audit built a picture of voluntary organisations and groups providing specific health services for women in London. Services targeted at women fall into these broad categories: © — general health © mental health © — specific health areas. The research found that 40 per cent of these organisations/projects served women and men (and children). 26 per cent were organisations/projects for women (eg women’s centres). A further 26 per cent had a primary focus on women’s health. Fewer health services were available in the outer London boroughs. Mental health and general health were the two most common health areas covered. Services for Black and minority ethnic women were the majority of targeted health services, but often small in scale with little funding and few or no paid staff. A majority of the organisations provided many other services than health, which was not their core/main activity. This was particularly true of Organisations providing services to Black and minority ethnic users. Ninety-nine per cent of the voluntary sector provision was direct health services rather than campaigning or ‘second tier’ health related services. Some of the positive conclusions and recommendations from the research are highlighted above. It also concluded that a major weakness was a lack of resources and funding.
