Patterns of inheritance II: diploid organisms 19 true-breeding for both characters, must be homozygous for both genes, can be represented as _|_ -|_wr _|_sr ip _j_wr J^gr for the strain with round yellow seeds, and wr gr wr gr for the strain with wrinkled green seeds. The breeding scheme is represented in full in figure 10. The scheme represented in figure 10, predicts that the -fë of the F2 progeny with round yellow seeds will be genetically heterogeneous. Only f would be homozygous for the round and yellow alleles and would therefore breed true. Mendel showed by further breeding experiments that these predictions were upheld. He also test crossed his Fl hybrids to the strain which was homozygous for the recessive alleles of the genes involved. In this case, this is the parent with wrinkled green seed. He predicted that he would obtain the four possible classes (round yellow; wrinkled yellow; round green; and wrinkled green) in equal numbers. The test cross is represented symbolically in figure 11. In his cross, Mendel obtained 55, 49, 51 and parents gametes by reduction division + + zygotes test-cross progeny + + wr gr round yellow wr wrgr wrinkled yellow ±?L wr gr round green wr gr wr gr wrinkled green Figure 11.
