Preface It may be thought that in choosing the title 'Genetics' for this book, I have been arrogant, but I have been persuaded that an ostensibly more modest title such as 'An Introduction to Genetics ' demands a much lengthier text than this, perhaps even in several volumes. This book is not of course a comprehensive textbook of Genetics. It is an elementary and introductory text which omits completely several important fields including for example the genetics of populations. It is based on the lectures which I give, as part of the Biology of Cells course, to first year undergraduates reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge. Many of these students become acquainted with genetics for the first time through these lectures, and I have found that the somewhat unconventional approach to Mendelism by way of the genetics of haploid organisms has proved particularly satisfactory for such students. There are many whom I should thank for the help given to me in writing this book, but in particular I should like to thank Professor J. M. Thoday for the help he gave me in devising the original lecture course, and so indirectly in the writing of this book. I should also like to thank Dr К. J. R. Edwards, Mr M. Isaacs and Dr D. W. Mac- Donald for their helpful criticism of the manuscript, Dr S. A. Hender¬ son for providing the photograph of meiosis, Dr. M. Ashburner for providing the photograph of chromosome puffing, Mrs J. Merry and Miss B. Short for typing the manuscript. D. J. COVE Trinity Hall, Cambridge June 1971
