The proportion of recoveries has been for the males 32-2, and for the females 54*4 per cent, on the admissions. There have been some very satisfactory recoveries during the past year, and in many cases patients semi-convalescent have been allowed out with their friends, on periods of probation varying from a few weeks to several months, prior to their final discharge by the Committee. No further experiments have been tried respecting the dis¬ charge of patients to Union Workhouses. It is justifiably open to Boards of Guardians to argue that they have not the proper accommodation for lunatics, and that in 1871 whilst utilising Workhouses for the reception of harmless chronic cases (pending the question of further enlargement of the Asylum) they reluct¬ antly accepted a necessity which could be no longer denied. The mortality has been 77 or 12-10 per cent, both sexes on the average numbers resident. The death-rate during the year has been higher than usual, and it might naturally have been expected that with the severe winter a higher rate of mortality
