    Yates Machine for Curing Smoky Chimneys. nine inches diameter and about twelve inches height for the smoak to pass through, spread a plate horizontally over the whole cavity of the chimney, and into the center thereof introduce the upper end of said cylinder; let one part of said plate turn upon hinges, so as to be let down occasionally and remove the soot which shall from time to time fall thereon; this in most cases will 5 effectually cure the smoaking, and in all cases increase the warmth of the room with a less quantity of coals. When the above machine does not effect the purpose intended, place the following machine upon the top of the chimney ** * 4 (that is to say):—-Place the bass of a cone of about twelve inches upon the top of the chimney, so as to comprehend the whole cavity thereof; let 10 the point of that cone (which should be of about six inches diameter) be introduced into the lower end of a cylinder of about ten inches in length and about the diameter of the bass of said cone; upon the upper end of said cylinder place the bass of another cone of about eight inches height and the diameter of the former, out of the point of which it is intended the smoak 15 should pass; but as high winds may sometimes prevent the same, in such case introduce the points of two or more small cones or tunnels into the lower end of said cylinder, so that the mouths or basses of such cones or tunnels present' themselves downwards, out of which the said smoak will pass when by winds prevented evacuating itself at the point of the upper cone; but if this should 20 not entirely answer the end proposed, instead of introducing the above- mentioned small cones or tunnels in the lower end of said cylinder, place them horizontally in the sides of such cylinder, and from the points of such small cones or tunnels continue air pipes of about three or four inches • •* diameter half wTay down the cavity of the chimney, returning the ends thereof 25 upwards about three inches; or otherwise place such small cones or tunnels with the air pipes affixed thereto upon the outside of the chimney, introducing the ends of such pipes into the chimney about half way down the same; this will infallibly give a draught to the chimney and prevent its smoaking for the future. And I, the said George Yates, do hereby averr, that the above is a 30 true, full, and perfect description of the nature of my said Invention.
