    (5) Young Adult. | This is perhaps the period when the benefits of sound health in the earlier stages are most apparent. During this phase economic pressures begin to make themselves felt and responsibilities, personal and commun- al, have to be shouldered. Interests arise towards ‘‘courtship, marriage, sexual adjustment ,. vocation, family, care of children, industrial and social: health,,’” e.g., housing, nutrition, epidemic disease, become of importance. (6) Middle Age. a In this period of full maturity we see the results of the practice of sound hygienic standards at the earlier stages of development. It is also » at this time that the vital processes begin to wane. This is the age-period when regular medical overhauls are of great importance. Under the Nat- ional Health Service Act it will be possible in due course, when adequate staff and premises become available, to extend the present facilities for , routine medical inspection, which have been so successful in the case of infants and school children, to persons of all ages and.particularly to middle age, the time when the degenerative diseases make their appear- - ance and cause anxiety. 0G (7) Old Age. The old need have no fear if the doors of the previous stages of: . growth and development have been unlocked by Health—the Master Key. Each age period of human life thus has its own peculiar problems and our attitude towards our responsibilities.as health teachers must take note of the fact. Our approach to the education of the people in health must be positive and inspired. Let us ignore Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice: ‘‘Shall I bend low, and in a bondman’s key With bated breath and whispering humbleness. ’’ Rather let us remember Milton’s Comus: ‘‘That golden key that opes the palace of eternity.’’. I have already referred to the elementary rules of hygiene and to their importance in social medicine, . Surely they are not the least important of the “‘basic needs of the citizen’’ which are, according to Lord Horder: (1) Sufficient of the proper food. (ii) | Suitable shelter and clothing. (iii) A satisfactory job of work. (iv) . Access to the fresh air and sun. (v) Reasonable leisure and the amenities of life.
