    This is a nut from the Sterculia Acuminata, and has been known before the earliest written records, for it enabled the natives to per¬ form journeys, the reports of which, at the time, seemed incre¬ dible, and in fact they were called ‘traveller’s tales.’ But from the in¬ formation given by travellers, through the press, we have now proved their value. How often after an operation it is advisable that the strength of a patient should be sustained, and yet it would be impossible or injudicious to give food. Kola supplies this want, and has given such good results that it has been adopted by many surgeons, but it is hardly known in our large hospitals. “ Ansemic-girls ” has become an expression both here and in Germany. Kola is the antidote as thousands can testify to. I introduced this Kola food into Europe and America some ten years since in the same way that I introduced the Coca made from the Ery- throxylon Coca ; and I have felt that if it was ever to enter into earnest competition with tea, coffee
