    07 ) ficians, we fhou’d find that Cinamon, Cloves, and other Spices, were always us’d with their Purgatives* as Galen has well obferv’d, That when ftrong Purgatives are given, it’s fit fuch Aromaticks, or warm Spices be mix’d with them, for itrong Phyfick always relaxeth the Stomach and Guts, Vide Gal 3. Simpl Med, feu. c. 14. and thefe are what Sir John Boyer means by fv/eet Aromaticks, the Effefts of which on the Body (fays he) are to warm the Stomach, difcufs and expel Wind, they firenth* en the Fibres of the Stomach, Membranes, and nervous Parts, and by their Volatile Parti¬ cles become Cordials ; Thefe are accounted Carminatives, fcecaufe they rarefie the flatuous' Exhalations from the Chyle, in the Ptinu Vuy and fo difcufs them. When the Ancients gave their Catapotia, which we call Pills, or any other dry Phyfick, after the Example of their Great Mailer Hippo¬ crates, they gave Apozems, medicated Wines, and other Liquids, by Help whereof the dry Phyfick might be the more readily diffolv’d, and fo, fooner convey’d to the Inteftines, and this in general was call’d Apozema by the Greeks, ——*Hippocrates fometimes us’d Apozems of the Nature of the Purgative; but when his Patients were delicate, he gave them after it, Cremor hordei, Jus pulli, Chicken Broth, and the like. Rufus orders ftrong Purgatives to be mix’d with weak, as Scammony v/ith Lenitive Eie- ttuary, or Marmalade, adding v/ith Hippo* H crates?
