    PUBLISHERS' NOTE. [For preface to the work, written hy Dr. Emil. Chr. Hansen, see volume /.] Since the publication of the first volume of this important work we have been repeatedly asked for the companion volume. The German publishers have now arranged to issue the second volume in parts rather than await the completion of the work. Advance sheets have therefore been placed in our hands, and we are now able to provide English readers with the present instalment, which con- stitutes Part I. of the second volume. The concluding portion of the volume will follow as soon as the German proofs come to hand. January 1903.
