![middens, small ashpit privies, hit) separate ashpits, 172 privy pans, and 7,444 water closets. 44ie conversion of these conveniences to water carriage is going on at a satisfactory ^ rate; in these cases wall tipping bins are introduced for house refuse. Scavenging. As in previous years the contents of the small combined Privies and Ashpits are removed once a week. 44ie large midden privies of which there are now 1,267 have their refuse removed about once in three weeks. As this number diminishes it should be possible to remove their contents still more frecpiently; they constitute a menace to the Public health and are a source of serious food pollution. It is of great importance, too, that midden steads in connexion with stables should be cleared at least once a week. During the hot weather this question receives special attention from the Sanitary Dei- partment. It is to be hoped that the efforts made by the Health Committee and b'y the public press to call attention to the serious danger arising from ffies in the hot weather will be successful in diminishing this danger to health, which is especially important in the case of young children. The Health Visitors are doing valuable work in this connexion. The Work of the Sanitary Inspectors and other Offucers engaged in sanitary work, is described in the report of the Chief Sanitary Inspector, which is printed herewith. 44iis report gives particulars of the work done during the year to protect the food supply. The samples of milk taken were usually of remarkably good quality, as shewn by chemical analysis, and it is to be hoped that the powers of local authorities will be extended so that the public may be further protected from the dangers caused by the existence of tubercle bacilli.
