![eflRSHflLTOIV URBHN DISTRieT. POPULATION. The populations at tlie Census 1891 and 1901 were 5,425 and 6,746 persons respectively. Assninin^ that the ]3opidation had continued to inciease at t ie same rate since tlie last Census as it did in the previous ten years, it would be 7,900 in the middle of the year 1908. The District has, however, developed rapidly in recent years, and contained about 1,970 inhabited houses at the end^ot the 3^ear. The averao-e number of persons per house at the last Census was od, and if it be taken to be 5 at the present time, the population at tlie middle of the year 1908 may be estimated to be 9,500 pei'soiis. BIETHS. The Births registered in the District during the year were 223 in number, representing an Annual Birth Bate of 23-5 per 1,000 of the estimated population, as against an average rate of 25*7 for the previous ten years; 117 of the children were boys and 106 were girls. The births of 8 illegitimate children were registered. DEATHS. The Deaths registered in the District during the year were 1.39 in numbei^ as against 107 in the previous year. Eight3-six deaths occurred in the town, 8 in the Cottage Hospital, 42 in the Crojxlon Bural Isolation Hospital, and 3 in the Nursing Home, Beeches Avenue. _ i • .i xt . • Four of the persons who died in the Cottage Hospital, and 1 in the JNuising Home, were parishioners of Carshalton, but the remaining 48 deaths m Institu- tions occurred among patients belonging to other districts^ and have to be deducted in estimating the Death Bate. Ten parishioners of Carshalton died in the Epsom Workhouse, 4 in the Cuddingtoii Isolation Hospital, and 1 each in Brookwood Asylum, St. Peter’s Home, Kilburn, and a Home at Sutton ; these 17 deaths have to be added, making a total of 108 deaths of persons belonging to the District. • ^ The Death Bate for the year, based upon these figures, is 11 *4 per 1,UUU ot the estimated population, as against an average of 12T for the previous 10 yeais. INFANT MQETALITY. The deaths of Infants under one year of age occurring in the District were 17 in number, but among these are included 2 deaths in the Cottage Hospital ot infants belonging to other Districts ; an infant belonging to the ^+i^^ a Home at Sutton. The Council resolved to adopt the Notification of Births Act, 190/, and made application to the Local Government Board for their consent thereto, in December.
