![[ 31 ] becomes conftant and intenfe. The Patient then complains of an acute Pain in the Head* of Heat and Sorenefs* rather than Pain, in the Throat, Sriffnefs of the Neck, com¬ monly of great Sicknefs, with Vomiting, Purging, or both (£). The Face foon after looks red and fwell’d, the Eyes inflam’d and watry, as in the Meafles; with Reftleffnefs* Anxiety* and Faintnefs. This Difeafe frequently feizes the Patient in the fore Part of the Day : As Night approaches, the Pleat and Reftleffnefs increafe, and conti- nue till towards Morning; when, after a fhort difturbed Slumber (the only Repofe they of¬ ten have during feveral Nights), a Sweat breaks out; which mitigates the Pleat and Reftleffnefs, and gives the Difeafe fometimes the Appearance of an Intermittent. X i If the Mouth and Throat be examin d foon after the fir ft Attack, the XJvula and Tonfils appear fwell'd' ; and thefe Parts* to¬ gether (b) The Vomiting and Purging were but feldom ob- ferved to accompany this Difeafe, at its firft Appearance amongft us, as I have been inform’d by fome Phyhcians of Eminence, who faw it early ; but it is generally agreed, that thefe Symptoms almoft conftantly attended, in the manner here deferibed, during the Years 1747 and 1748* the Time in which thefe Obfervations were collected : And I have found, that within thefe three Months, the abovemention’d Symptoms have not fo regularly appeared as before.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30546266_0042.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
