Deaths.—The year under report has registered a decline in the number of deaths as compared to the previous year and also to the mean of the previous five years. The total number of deaths registered was 4,94,887 in 1939, 5,47,387, the quinquennial average being 5,10,793 (graph No. 1). Death-rates in Collectorates—Only Ahmedabad District (36°41) recorded death-rate above 35 per mille of population. Five districts had death-rates between 30 and 35 per mille and thirteen districts had rates between 20 and 30 per mille. Low death-rate was recorded in Bombay Suburban District (18°92). As compared with the preceding year eighteen districts out of the total twenty recorded a decrease in the death-rate, the exceptions being Broach and Bijapur. In Broach District the death-rate has been influenced by more deaths under Fevers and Respiratory Diseases and in Bijapur District by Fevers and All Other Causes. Marked deviations from the mean of the previous five years’ rates are shown by West Khandesh (6°51), Poona (3°08), Dharwar (2°72) and Satara (2°52), which have recorded the decline shown against them while Broach (2°44) and Surat (1°77) show an increase over the previous five years. The death-rates for rural and urban areas for the Province during the year under report were 27°17 and 28°83 per mille respectively against 29°97 and 32°47 in 1938.
