![At this period Wilde’s admiration for Whistler was unbounded, as may be seen from the following passage : There is a man living amongst us who unites in himself all the qualities of the noblest art, whose work is a joy for all time, who is a master of all time himself—that man is Mr. Whistler. Much of the manuscript is detailed and consecutive— - evidently intended to be read from; other passages are mere notes Hotel, near Margate, n.d. % 1883 6 55 ‘“* Americans no memory,” hurry, | ~ mome,” ete: “no rags,” “‘ everybody in a written in pencil, of the letter which appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette, Oct. 14, 1884 (Mason, p. 133) : . whatever one wears on the extremities, such as the feet and head, should be made of a soft material and should take its shape from the way one wears it and not from any stiff stereotyped design of hat or boot maker, etc. 114 pp. 4to, incomplete, of the letter published in the Pall Mall Gazette, Nov. 11, 1884 (Mason, p. 134) : . . . Clogs are worn to the present [day] in England in some of our manufacturing towns such as Oldham—TI fear that in Oldham they may not be dreams of beauty ; in Oldham the art of inlaying them with ivory and pearl is I fear unknown—yet in Oldham they serve their purpose and serve it well—ete. ** in pencil, apparently unpublished 7c. 1886 A review of Amiel’s Journal and Lord Beaconsfield’s letters to his sister : The first has thrilled the coteries, and the second delighted the Clubs. Amiel is spoken of on Parnassus, and Lord Beaconsfield quoted in Piccadilly. Yet between the two men there is at least this point of resemblance.
