[1893-4] This play was first published in the collected edition of Wilde’s works, 1908. <A reduced facsimile of the first page of this MS. appears in Mr. Mason’s Bibliography, p. 463. portion of this tragedy, UNPUBLISHED save in Mr. Mason’s Bibliography, pp. 464-5. * OK * Notes on philosophical subjects, marbled boards Probably an Oxford “ Greats”? notebook; several pages are devoted to social science and many more to a discussion of Plato’s doctrines, with quotations from and allusions to, Renan, Hume, Buckle, and many other writers. *% * chiefly on ancient history Probably another Oxford notebook ; such headings occur as Roman Religion, Rationalistic Passage (? in Poly- bius), Philosophy of History, Plutarch, Tacitus, etc. Some portions may be notes for Wilde’s essay on “ His- torical Criticism among the Ancients,” written for the Chancellor’s Prize in 1879 (Mason, pp. 470-1). * * Mostly epigrams or quotations, e.g. : There is nothing new but what has been forgotten. So many poetical writers so few poets. Omnipotence is with the ages—ete.
