    B. Midwifery Services. Todmorden Borough Council have an agreement with Halifax Corporation for the treatment of maternity cases, both normal and abnormal. During 1942 36 cases were sent to Halifax General Hospital at a cost of £347 9s. Od. of which £124 Is. 6d. was recovered from the patients in accordance with an income scale which came into force on June 1st, 1940, and which has been explained in detail in the report of 1940. Consultant Obstetrician. The services of Mr. B. D- Jeaffreson, M.D., E.R.C.S., of the Deeds Maternity Hospital are available for difficult obstetric cases occuring in private practice in the town. During 1942 there was no call on Mr. Jeaffreson’s services. Emergency Obstetric Unit. The Emergency Unit attached to the Deeds Maternity Hospital is available for any cases which require it. The fee per visit is six guineas to which is added a mileage charge. The Emergency Unit attached to the Halifax General Hospital was made available free of charge in April, 1941. This Unit was called upon twice during the year. In the first case the patient had a dangerous post partum haemor¬ rhage with delayed delivery of the after-birth. The Unit was sent for by a local practitioner. It was very quickly on the scene and an intravenous plasma was soon given followed by a blood transfusion. The patient was later admitted to Halifax General Hospital where she made an excellent recovery. The Unit was out on another occasion—also a haemor¬ rhage—with the same happy result. On both occasions the life of the mother was in grave jeopardy and the services of the Unit were much appreciated by the patients and their relatives. Although the Unit was free of charge your Committee made a voluntary contribution of £4 4s. Od. to the Halifax Corporation on each occasion. Midwives. The County Council is the local Supervising Authority and it reimburses the Docal Authority for the net cost of the service. The bulk of the domiciliary midwifery in the town is carried out by the Municipal Midwife (Nurse Mills), whose fees are collected by the Docal Authority,
