Fragment of the beginning of a prose recension of the Ramayana. Translated from the Javanese. On the Javanese versions of this Indian epic, cf. 27 supra. Begins: ‘“ Praboo, mantilly-dherjah [=Prabu Mantili Dirja] (or King) residing in Mantilly dherjah, his Gar wah [=garwa] (or wife) named Rajah-Koontee-dhennahkah [=Raja Kunti Dinaka?]; The Praboo-mantilly-dherjah was very wise. Andall Rajahs [=raja](or Kings) obeyed him Praboo mantilly dherjah got Girl who was found the Sammoodrau [=samudra] (or Sea) the Praboo mantilly dherjah gave her name Dhewe settau [=Dewi Sita]. She was very beautiful, many Rajahs have loved her very much. Dhewe settau got married toa young Prince named Rammah-dhewah [=Ramadewa, of Dau rah-wattee-prauwah [=Darawati-prawa]. Rammah dhewah had a young brother by name Bangbang-lucksmannah [= Bang- bang Léksmana]; Rammah dhewah after he loved the Queen Dhewe-settau. She also loved her husband very much.—” Ends unfinished (p. 279): ‘‘Praboo manntilly dherjah said to the people that this Prince Rammah dhewah will become a great Rajah remember that you do not trouble any one when you shall be made Rajah. If you do so Yang weddee [=Yang Widi] (or God) will be angry with you remember what I tell you upon which Rammah dhewah answered I will obey that what you say. When Rammah-dhewah, Dhewe settau and Lucksmannah paid their obeisence to Praboomannatilly dherjah also two of the servants named Summare [=Sémar] and Badraunayah [=Badranaya] Praboomantilly dherjah said to Summare to that if your master Rammah dhewah have any ill [o]pinion you must remeind him as you are the oldest servant To which Summare answered him very well, after Summare & Badrau nayah left Praboomantilly dherjah.—Next follows the accounts of the 10 Headed Praboo dhausah moockah [=Dasamuka] (dhausah) meaning ten (moockah) meaning face.
